Our Conductor – Richard Wainwright

Richard Wainwright is a conductor, French horn player, and music educator. His varied career has seen him travel the world over, working with many of the finest and most influential musicians of our time.

He has conducted many brass groups, wind ensembles and orchestras in wide ranging programmes of both classical and lighter music. Whilst working with training and amateur groups, his commitment to the music is unwavering and he draws the best out of his ensembles with his combination of insight and encouragement, resulting in exciting performances.

As a renowned French horn player, he is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. He has performed all of the Mozart horn concertos, Strauss’s first concerto, and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings many times in addition to other solo works. Next year he will premiere a specially commissioned concerto by Paul Lewis. As a chamber player, he has performed recitals at home and the Far East and has made live appearances on Classic FM and BBC Radio 3, most recently with the Haffner Wind Ensemble. He has been a guest principal with many chamber and symphony orchestras, and has held positions in Germany, Portugal, and Ireland. He has worked under the batons of Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink and Yehudi Menuhin amongst many other leading conductors.

Richard’s discography includes recordings for EMI, Naxos, BMG, and Warner Brothers labels. He frequently appears in recordings for radio, and for television and film soundtracks.

Richard is keen to share his knowledge and enthusiasm and is in much demand as a music educator and teacher. He has a special empathy with his students, many whom have gone on to careers in music themselves. He has given masterclasses and workshops at UK conservatoires and in Japan, South Africa, and Eastern Europe. Working with many community based and often marginalised groups of people, Richard is a passionate believer in the power of music to be a force for good.
