Chorleywood orchestra is a symphony orchestra with more than 40 regular members led by conductor Daniel Hogan. Daniel is an emerging talent on the international conducting scene and the orchestra has enjoyed his skilled leadership since 2022. He works with many amateur orchestras across the country, and loves the camaraderie, the unique collaborations and the way the orchestra connects with our community. The orchestra meets every Tuesday at The Russell School in Chorleywood and welcomes new members of all ages who are grade 6 and above, particularly strings and lower brass. Current members hail from Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Middlesex and many have joined after a break from playing, following a return from university or having a family. We come from a variety of disciplines from teaching and engineering to museum curating and medicine.
Our concerts and repertoire
We choose enjoyable and accessible music to play – changing our selection of pieces regularly to keep it interesting for everyone involved. We present several concerts each year in local venues and are very privileged to showcase the extraordinary talents of prize winners from the Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year competition. Recent concerts have included works by Dvorak, Mussorgsky, Beethoven, Butterworth, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Elgar and lots more. The orchestra has produced several family themed concerts aimed at encouraging young children with short attention spans and fidgety feet to come and experience live orchestral music. These have included festive concerts like The Snowman and The Nutcracker, accompanied by lively narration and a children’s choir. We have also held:
Choral concerts where the orchestra has combined with singers from Chorleywood Choral Society
Weekend workshops to immerse ourselves in a 2-day orchestral challenge
Outdoor festival concerts like the Concert on the Common
